CARE Assists the Flood Affected people in North Afghanistan

CARE Afghanistan provided relief assistance to flood affected families in the form of direct distribution of essential non-food items and through a donation of river-stabilization materials to the government for use in their priority areas.
Floods and landslides in the ten provinces of Badakhshan, Badghis, Baghlan, Balkh, Faryab, Jawzjan Samangan and Sari-i-Pul and Takhar in the north and Herat in the west have caused widespread destruction and casualties, according to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDAMA).
Ninety four people have been killed and 13,689 families have been affected, 112 bridges and 600km roads have been partially destroyed in affected areas.

CARE Afghanistan provided relief assistance to the victims of these floods, in the form of direct distribution of essential non-food items to affected families, and through a donation of river-stabilization materials to the government for use in their priority areas.

On 13th May 2009, CARE Afghanistan’s Country Director, Lex Kassenberg, handed over 115 gabion boxes and 700 gabion sheets.to the President of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDAMA), who will use the equipment to stabilize some of the most severely damaged river barriers in the north.

During the hand-over ceremony (see photo) the President of ANDMA thanked CARE for their consistent support during emergencies, and for being among the first of national and international agencies to respond to the government’s call. “ANDMA will distribute the gabions to the affected areas of Samangan province” he added. “CARE is providing assistance valued at more than 50,000 US dollars to the affected areas.”


At the site of the floods in Balkh province, CARE stopped its normal activities for one week and its field staff distributed 243 tents, 357 tarpaulins, 169 blankets, 1500 patus, 279 buckets, as well as numerous hygiene kits, jerricans and bars of soap to the affected households in Khulm, Sholgara, Charkint, Keshendi and Zarih districts of Balkh province.
